Description

Switchboard Non-Conductive Matting — Certified Electrical Safety Protection

Working near high-voltage equipment demands proper insulation between workers and the floor. Switchboard Non-Conductive Matting provides that critical protection — tested and certified to the most rigorous electrical safety standards in the industry.

Every roll is proof tested at 20,000 volts across the entire surface. Dielectric strength is certified to 30,000 volts. And the recommended maximum use voltage of 17,000 volts provides a substantial safety margin for workers in substations, switchgear areas, control rooms, and anywhere high-voltage electrical hazards exist.

Why Switchboard Matting is Critical

Non-conductive matting serves as an insulative barrier between workers and potentially lethal electrical current. In the event of contact with energized equipment, the mat prevents the current from finding a path to ground through the worker’s body. This isn’t convenience matting — it’s life-safety equipment.

Every installation should include:

  • Proper voltage rating for the equipment present
  • Annual inspection for wear, damage, or contamination
  • Replacement when damage is detected or rating is compromised
  • Documentation of installation date and inspection history

Four Styles for Different Applications

Corrugated Switchboard (SKU 781) The most versatile option with a ribbed surface pattern that provides traction and debris drainage. Available in three widths (24″, 36″, 48″). Type II, Class 2 rated with full flame, oil, and ozone resistance per ASTM D-178-01.

Diamond Plate Switchboard (SKU 783) Diamond pattern surface provides enhanced traction in wet or oily environments. Type II, Class 2 rated per ASTM D-178-01. Available in 36″ width.

Military Diamond Switchboard (SKU 784) Meets strict military specification MIL-DTL-15562G Type III. Diamond surface pattern. Designed for government and defense installations requiring military-grade certification. Available in 36″ width.

Military Smooth Switchboard (SKU 782) Meets MIL-DTL-15562G Type II specification. Smooth surface for easy cleaning in applications where debris accumulation is minimal. Thinnest profile at 1/8″. Available in 36″ width.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Routine Cleaning:

  • Scrub with a deck brush using detergent with neutral pH
  • Rinse with hose or pressure washer
  • Lay flat or hang to dry
  • Ensure mat is completely dry before returning to service

Critical Maintenance Requirements:

  • Inspect matting annually (or more frequently in heavy-use environments)
  • Check for cuts, tears, holes, or contamination
  • Look for signs of deterioration, cracking, or chemical damage
  • Replace immediately if damage is detected
  • Document inspection dates and findings

⚠️ WARNING: Damaged or contaminated switchboard matting may not provide adequate electrical protection. When in doubt, replace the matting.

FAQs

What’s the difference between ASTM D-178 and MIL-DTL-15562G?
ASTM D-178 is the American standard for non-conductive matting used in commercial and industrial applications. MIL-DTL-15562G is the military specification required for government and defense installations. Both ensure 30,000V dielectric strength, but MIL spec includes additional testing for durability, aging, and environmental resistance.

What does “Type II, Class 2” mean?
Type II indicates a premium PVC compound resistant to UV, ozone, and chemicals. Class 2 indicates a dielectric strength of 30,000V with proof testing at 20,000V. The maximum recommended use voltage for Class 2 is 17,000V.

What’s the maximum voltage I can safely use these mats with?
For Corrugated and Diamond Plate (ASTM Type II, Class 2): the maximum recommended use voltage is 17,000 volts AC. The mats are tested to 30,000V, but the lower use rating provides a substantial safety margin.

How often should switchboard matting be inspected?
Annually at minimum. More frequent inspection is recommended in high-use environments or where chemical/oil exposure occurs. Any visible damage, cuts, or contamination warrants immediate replacement.

Should I use Corrugated or Diamond Plate?
Corrugated provides good traction and allows debris to drain through the ribs. Diamond Plate offers enhanced traction in wet or oily conditions where the raised diamond pattern can grip better. Both have identical electrical ratings.

When should I use Military spec matting?
Military specification matting (MIL-DTL-15562G) is required for government and defense installations. It’s also appropriate for any application requiring documented compliance to military standards.

Can these mats be cut to size?
Yes. Switchboard matting can be easily cut with standard tools to fit your installation. However, cutting should be done carefully to avoid damaging edges that could compromise the mat’s integrity.

What’s the difference between Military Diamond and Military Smooth?
Military Diamond (Type III) has a raised diamond surface pattern for enhanced traction and is 3/16″ thick. Military Smooth (Type II) has a flat surface for easy cleaning and is 1/8″ thick. Both meet MIL-DTL-15562G specifications.

Are these mats flame resistant?
Yes. All switchboard matting passes flame resistance testing per their respective standards (ASTM D178 Appendix or MIL-STD-1623).

How do I store unused matting?
Store rolls flat or upright in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight, ozone sources (like electric motors), and chemical exposure. Keep in original packaging until ready for use.
